Closenberg translates to “the citadel on which the sea roars†as coined by the Dutch, who ran a naval fortalice atop Galle’s magical little island in the 1700s during their rule of Ceylon. In 1860 Captain Bailey, the P&O agent, discovered what remained of the Dutch fortalice, to build the beautiful mansion in the name of his artist wife Marina. In 1889 Closenberg was acquired by Simon Perera Abeyewardene, and still remains in the Perera Abeyewardene run by the 4th and 5th generation as a heritage hotel.
